Ranchi Rhinos (abbreviated as RR) is a field hockey team based in Ranchi, Jharkhand that plays in the Hockey India League. The team won the inaugural season of Hockey India League defeating Delhi Waveriders by 2-1. It is owned by Patel-Uniexcel Group. South African Gregg Clark is the head coach for the team assisted by Olympian Baljit Singh Saini. German midfielder, two time Olympic champion, Moritz Fürste is the captain of the team.

Coaching Staff

South African Gregg Clark serves as the head coach for the team who is assisted by Olympian Baljit Singh Saini. The goalkeeping coach of South Africa, David Staniforth, acts as the goalkeeping coach and video analyst for the team. David Ian John of Australia is the exercise physiologist for the team.


The team was jointly bought by Patel – PS Group and Uniexcel Group on 14 September 2012. Patel Group is headquartered in Bangalore, and the Uniexcel Group is headquartered in Taiwan with offices in China, Dubai,India and Bangladesh. It is headed by its chairman Mr. Suresh Kumar Chauhan. Whereas PS Group is a Kolkata Based Real Estate giant with operations in Kolkata, Chennai, Coimbatore and Patna headed by Mr.Surendra Kumar Dugar and Mr. Pradip Kumar Chopra.

With the Hockey India League stepping into the second edition this year the champions of the opening season, the Ranchi Rhinos will look to make it a double this year. The final of the first edition was played between the Ranchi Rhinos and Delhi Wave Riders where the two teams fought till the very end and Ranchi Rhinos emerged as the winners beating Delhi Wave Riders by two goals to one. The team from Ranchi is owned by the Patel Uniexcel Group that bought the team on the 14th of September 2012.

The team is managed by some of the stalwarts in the field of Hockey. The captain of the team is Moritz Furste, the German international and the coach of the head coach of the team is Gregg Clark, the South African. David Staniforth who is the goal keeping coach of the South African national team is the video analyst and also the goal keeping coach of the Ranchi Rhinos. Apart from this the team physiologist is also from Australia, David Ian John. The full team is assisted by Baljit Singh Saini who featured for India in the Olympics. The coaching staff and the whole team are confident enough to win this tournament once again.

Ranchi Rhinos came from a goal down to beat Delhi Waveriders 2-1 and win the inaugural Hockey India League (HIL) in a thrilling summit clash at the Astroturf Hockey Stadium on Sunday.

The Rhinos were trailing for most part of the match after Simon Child gave Delhi the lead in the 25th minute .But the Ranchi outfit never gave up and displayed tremendous fighting spirit to score through Austin Smith (55th) before Manpreet Singh (63rd) scored a late winner for the home team.

The Rhinos got an opportunity to draw parity in the 32nd minute when they earned their first penalty corner, but skipper Moritz Fuerste’s low flick was saved by an alert Nicolas Jacobi at the Delhi goal. The Rhinos were unlucky not to have levelled the scoreline just before the end of the third quarter. Their star forward Mandeep Singh missed a sitter from close range after he was set up by Fuerste.
